I francesi Nightmare si formano nel 1979 suonando punk rock. Quando nel 1980 si spostano verso l'heavy metal i membri fondatori lasciano la band, così Yves Campion (basso) ed Etienne Stauffert (voce) rimangono gli unici membri originali. Tra il 1981 e il 1983 registrano tre demo, attirano l'attenzione aprendo per i Def Leppard nel 1983 e ci sono alcuni cambi di formazione: Jo Amore (batteria), Nicolas De Dominicis (chitarra), Christopher Houpert (voce, tastiere) e Jean Strippoli (chitarra) si uniscono a Yves. Con questa formazione registrano il loro debutto "Waiting for the Twilight" nel 1984 per la Ebony, seguito da "Power of the Universe" (con il nuovo cantante Jean-Maire Boix) nel 1985 sempre per la Ebony; era in programma anche un terzo album intitolato "Nova Atlantis" ma non vede mai la luce, così nel 1988 si sciolgono. Riformati nel 1999, i Nightmare tornano con un sound piu' carico e potente: Jo Amore lascia la batteria e diventa il cantante, David Amore è il nuovo batterista. La prima uscita dopo la reunion è l'Ep "Astral Deliverance" (1999) seguito dall'album dal vivo "Live Deliverance" (2000). Nel 2001 i Nightmare pubblicano "Cosmovision", un ambizioso e solido concept album, il loro primo full-length in sedici anni. Attraverso nuovi cambi di formazione pubblicano altri nove album in studio, l'ultimo dei quali è "Encrypted" (2024). Disponibile in vinile per la prima volta.
French Nightmare formed back in 1979 playing punk rock. When in 1980 the music evolved to heavy metal, founding members leave the band, so Yves Campion (bass) and Etienne Stauffert (vocals) remain the only original members.
Three demos are recorded between 1981 and 1983, they gain attention opening for Def Leppard in 1983 and some lineup changes happen: Jo Amore (drums), Nicolas De Dominicis (guitars), Christopher Houpert (vocals, keys) and Jean Strippoli (guitar) unite to Yves. With this line-up they record their debut album "Waiting for the Twilight" in 1984 for Ebony, followed by "Power of the Universe" (with new vocalist Jean-Maire Boix) in 1985 for Ebony too; also a third album called "Nova Atlantis" was planned but never took light, so in 1988 they split.
Reformed in 1999 Nightmare return with a much more dominant power metal sound, Jo Amore leaves drums and becomes the lead vocalist, David Amore joines as drummer. Their first release upon reunion is the Ep" Astral Deliverance" (1999) which is followed by live album "Live Deliverance" (2000).
In 2001 Nightmare release "Cosmovision", ambitious and solid concept album, their first full-length in sixteen years. Through new line-up changes they release a further nine studio albums, the latest is "Encrypted" (2024). Available on vinyl for the first time.
